Research and creative interests also include studying the psychological benefits of art, digital art, using technology in art and art education, teaching and learning art online, art history. She is presently researching and creating a curriculum to teach fashion design at the high school level utylizing computers.
Debra did scholarly research and a thesis presentation called The Importance of Art In the Twenty-first Century and received the prestigious Shea Scholar Award as a result of her work. Recently, she also researched The Davis Company in Worcester, Massachusetts and created and published a timeline.
Identity Project
This is a visual self-portrait I created about myself as a teacher. Here is the description of the work:
I chose colors for this work that are warm and happy, but intense- like me. I depict myself as happy, blonde, a little pudgy, with a blue shirt, my favorite color to wear. I am juggling many things while teaching. I strive to make my art room feel like “home” to students who are different, who may not be successful in academics. It is a place to feel safe & cherished, to try new things, to get messy, to experiment safely, with support. I show the image of the clock because I struggle with that time is always short (by the time students get their materials set up, and begin to really dig into their work, it is time to clean up. We also only have such a short time in the life of a student to make a difference in their lives. There is a computer in the image to represent the technology segment of the art I teach, such as digital art and photography and Photoshop. The background is a swirling vortex, which I am the center of. I feel like this at times, when students all demand and clamor for attention at once. There is a wave in the top left to represent Cape Cod, where I live and teach. There are the paints and brushes on an artist palette, hands on a pottery wheel, which represents some of the media used in my room. Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting is in the image, representing the Art History which I share with my students. I show this because I believe in the Discipline-Based Art Education approach (DBAE) method which includes Art History, as well as a study of Aesthetics, Art Criticism, along with the usual studio techniques. I also show an image from Italy, which has been one of my greatest inspirations in recent years.
I also juggle a globe, because I also believe in the study of cultures and art from around the world (Multi-culturalism) and also try to include global awareness and contemporary issues as well (thus the Globe). I am wearing my camera around my neck because it is like a part of me, after being a photographer for twenty five years, and I often view the world through a lens. It has taught me to have a heightened aesthetic awareness, to really “see” the beauty of the world, and in people. I hope that this is transmitted to my students everyday, and they feel the love I have for them, for art and for living in an artful way.
Upcoming Assignments:
-Critical Intervention/Personal Voice Action Plan
-Annotated Bibliography
-Independent Research Project

As an art teacher it is a great idea to explore your own personal history with art education. I did this for my grad class on the History of Art Education. I created a timeline that describes my own journey and how it led me here: You can view it by clicking on:
