Reflecting upon my own Artistic Development:
As part of my graduate program at the University of Florida, I have been studying artistic development in children and teenagers. Now I am exploring the path of my own artistic development over the years. You can click on the document above for a complete description and analysis of it. As a child my art education consisted of Holiday Art and then crafts in scouts. I did not have arts courses in high school. Really my first experience with art was in undergraduate school, where I made these very first paintings. I did many others, but I was so proud of them I gave them away as gifts so I do not have much evidence from back then.
It wasn't until age 28 that I got my start as an "artist" by being trained as an Olan Mills Photographer. These are not photos I took myself, but they are very similar since we were all trained to take the exact same poses under the same lighting conditions etc. There was not a lot of "artfulness" to it, except for the ability to work with all kinds of people. It did make me realize that I had a calling for it, and soon I went on to learn more and open up my own studio. They seem so funny, dorky and ridiculous now. Why did they have those fake country or library backgrounds? Ha Ha! But we may laugh but Olan Mills is a billion dollar corporation, whose consistency and business model made them a great success. I learned about photographing, posing and lighting a family group of twenty to a two-day old newborn as well as using a roll-film camera.
Next, I opened my own storefront studio, and I could make my own aesthetic choices, and also do work outside the studio. I did weddings, studio portraits, family and high school senior portraits on the beach, and magazine work. I strive to depict the joy of life, and relationships, and happy loving families.
Note: All images are digital photographs of varying sizes from 11x14 to 30x40 inches.
Next, in my artistic development: The study of Art History and Fine Art
I became especially inspired by an artist, John Singer Sargent, whose work I visited frequently at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Here is one of my favorite examples of his work- and my work to follow. I began creating Digital paintings from my photographs using a program called Corel Painter, and had a garden party exhibit with the following portraits of young ladies.

Traveling also affected me greatly as an artist. You can see many examples of my
travel images elsewhere on this site. But here are two of my favorites below.
Next, there are some images of my graduate artwork at UF. As you can see they are done in a completely different style than anything I have previously done, and I am challenging myself to try new directions in art, such as political and social statements.
